PBJ Smoothie: A High Protein Peanut Butter and Jelly Breakfast in 5 Minutes

October 18, 2026•3 min read

If you grew up loving peanut butter and jelly, this smoothie is for you. It has the same cozy flavor, but with 35 grams of protein and 9 grams of fiber to keep you full and energized well past breakfast.

It takes five minutes, one cup, and an immersion blender. That’s my kind of morning.

Why This PBJ Smoothie Works

I build meals using the PCC approach: Protein, Carb, and Color. This smoothie checks every box.

  • Protein: Fairlife skim milk and Greek yogurt are the base, with a little extra from both kinds of peanut butter.

  • Carb: Milk, yogurt, and berries give you steady energy when they’re paired with protein and fat.

  • Color: Frozen mixed berries bring natural sweetness, antioxidants, and 5 grams of fiber on their own.

  • Staying power: Peanut butter and milled chia and flax add healthy fats and extra fiber, which is what helps a smoothie feel like a real meal instead of a snack.

You don’t have to give up anything you like. You’re eating what you enjoy and adding what you need.

PBJ Smoothie Ingredients

  • 1 cup Fairlife skim milk

  • 3/4 cup vanilla Greek yogurt

  • 1 cup frozen mixed berries

  • 1 tablespoon milled chia and flax seed

  • 1 tablespoon powdered peanut butter

  • 1 tablespoon smooth peanut butter

Makes: 1 serving
Prep time: 5 minutes

How to Make It

  1. Add all ingredients to a large cup.

  2. Blend with an immersion blender until smooth.

  3. Enjoy right away.

A regular blender works too. Just add the liquids first, then the yogurt, then the frozen berries on top.

Why Two Kinds of Peanut Butter?

Great question. The powdered peanut butter gives you that roasted peanut flavor with very little fat, and the smooth peanut butter adds creaminess and healthy fats that help the smoothie keep you full. Using both gives you the best taste and texture without needing a lot of either one.

Nutrition Information

Per serving: about 450 calories, 35 g protein, 49 g carbohydrates, 12 g fat, and 9 g fiber. Numbers will vary slightly by brand.

Tips and Swaps

  • Want it thicker? Add a handful of ice or a few extra frozen berries.

  • Want a stronger PBJ flavor? Use frozen strawberries or raspberries as your berries.

  • Want more protein? Add a scoop of vanilla protein powder.

  • Nut allergy? Swap the peanut butter for sunflower seed butter and skip the powdered version.

  • Meal prep tip: Portion the berries and chia and flax into bags in the freezer. When you’re ready, add the milk, yogurt, and peanut butter and blend.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this PBJ smoothie high in protein?
Yes. With about 35 grams of protein per serving, it’s a strong option for breakfast or after a workout. Many women in midlife need more protein than they’re getting, and this is an easy way to start.

Can I use fresh berries instead of frozen?
You can, but frozen berries make the smoothie thick and cold without watering it down. If you use fresh, add a handful of ice.

Is this smoothie good for blood sugar?
It’s a balanced option because it combines protein, fiber, and fat with carbs from fruit and dairy, which helps meals feel steadier and more satisfying. If you have specific blood sugar goals or a diagnosis, a Registered Dietitian can help you tailor it.

Can I make it dairy free?
Yes. Use a high protein dairy-free milk and yogurt. Nutrition will change, so check your labels.

Can I skip the chia and flax?
You can, but they add fiber and healthy fats with almost no change in taste. If you do skip them, the smoothie will be a little lower in fiber.
