The Power of Community in Weight Loss
You've probably heard the phrase, it takes a village to raise a child. It is true with the community you need around you for your support and your children's growth. You also need a village or community to be able to lose weight. Just like with parenting, it's always easier to lose weight when you have others to support you, take some of the load off your back with meal planning and prepping, and keeping the motivation high. Even if you're using weight loss injections or weight loss medications, you still need a community and experts to make weight loss realistic and sustainable for the long run. Those who look to lose weight fast usually can make progress quicker when they have someone with them and support them, rather than going it alone. Let's dive into how having community and support can make weight loss easier and more sustainable.
In this blog, we will cover why having a community and support makes reaching your goals easier, how a community can do this, and where to look for community if you desire to lose weight.
Why Community and Support Make Reaching Your Goals Easier
Think back to when you were in high school or college. A few times a year, you were likely given a large project to work on with a selected small group. When you received the info packet in the beginning, the amount of work seemed overwhelming. There were pieces of the project due that weren't your strong points, and knowing yourself, you were concerned that you put all the work off to the last minute. But then you realized that you would have a team of 4 other individuals to work on the project, pace the work and progress, lean on each other with questions and support, and make your life less stressful. Having your little team made it easier to collaborate, stay motivated and excited about the project, and even do your best work to not let the team down.
The same is true when you're looking to lose weight; whether you're using weight loss injections or weight loss medications or not. Having a team of others around you, people who are in the same boat as you, with the stress and headaches that can come along with weight loss. Community provides the opportunity for validation around feelings of stress and annoyance if the scale isn't moving as fast as you'd like. Community can also be a place to learn from one another on your journey. The woman who is looking to lose weight fast can learn from the woman in the group who has put time, consistency, and effort into sustainably losing 1 pound a week. The group can also be a place where you can learn from experts in the field. Inside the Nourished Membership with Nourished with Emily, you get access to Registered Dietitians who take science and make it applicable to your life. With open Q and A and group calls, you get to learn from each other and credentialed experts.
How Community Can Help You Achieve Your Goals
Being in a community or group brings the phrase, together we rise, to life. Community not only can help serve you with your goals of weight loss and overall healthy habits, but it can also be a way to help give back with encouragement and support that others may not get inside their own home. Take our client Cindy for example, Cindy lives alone and has been working hard on weight loss. But, as someone living alone, setting goals and keeping herself accountable can be hard. She will set goals in her mind, but without communicating them to someone else or tracking her goals, she has a hard timehitting them consistently and keeping her motivation high. Having a group outside of family and friends, a place to run to if you have questions or need to be inspired, makes motivation come easier and quicker.
Community can also help to inspire and challenge us to show up authentically for ourselves. Everyone has their own path when looking to lose weight. Maybe they are working inside our signature nutrition coach program, taking weight loss injections or medications, or in a weight loss support group. Each path to getting to our goals teaches us different lessons that, when in a community, can help to teach and inspire others.
Where to Find the Best Weight Loss Communities
Community can be created anywhere, but we do want to consider what we are looking to get out of a community before diving into one. There are many Facebook groups that pose as communities but end up being predatory for MLM products and promoting harmful and negative health behaviors. These groups are usually hosted by individuals who don't have your best interest in mind and only look to promote products or spread misinformation about nutrition.
Look for a community that has real experts, like Registered Dietitians, leading the way, with testimonials from real clients to support the process and resources that help you flourish beyond working in the community. Real growth comes from using the group and then blossoming on your own with the tools and strategies you've learned. The Nourished Membership strives to be a place of community support, expert guidance, strategy, and resources to help you grow on your own.
If you're looking to lose weight and keep it off, with or without weight loss medications or weight loss injections, having community is key to your longterm sucess and motivation. Having like-minded folks come together and share wins and their lessons, plus having resources to make success easier and more fun.
