5 Sneaky Signs of Inflammation That Might Be Stalling Your Progress

Blog post titled "5 Signs Inflammation is Holding you Back from your Weight Loss Goals" over a kitchen counter with fruits and snacks. Registered Dietitian in Syracuse New York, Weight loss without dieting

Ever feel like no matter what you do, your body just isn’t cooperating with your health or weight loss goals? Maybe you’re feeling sluggish, your digestion is all over the place, or your skin is breaking out like you’re back in high school. If that sounds familiar, chronic inflammation might be the culprit.

Inflammation is just stress inside your body. A little is normal—it’s part of how your body heals and protects itself. But when inflammation sticks around too long, it starts to cause problems like bloating, fatigue, joint pain, and immune system issues. As a Registered Dietitian, I see many clients struggling with these issues without realizing that inflammation is at the root of their frustrations. Here are five signs that chronic inflammation is working against you:

1. Gas and Bloating Are Taking Over

Struggling with bloating and digestive discomfort? If you throw on your favorite jeans and they suddenly feel too snug, it might not just be weight gain—it could be inflammation. Digestive inflammation can slow down your GI system, cause bloating, and mess with your bathroom habits, leaving you feeling uncomfortable and sluggish.

2. You’re Exhausted, Even After a Full Night’s Sleep

If you wake up feeling just as tired as when you went to bed, chronic inflammation might be at play. Inflammation impacts how your body absorbs and uses nutrients, leading to sluggish energy levels and persistent fatigue. No matter how much you sleep, you might still feel drained if your body is inflamed.

3. Your Immune System is in the Tank

Are you constantly catching colds or feeling under the weather? Chronic inflammation can weaken your immune system, making it harder to fight off infections. If you're under high stress or not eating enough, your body might be in a constant state of stress, making you more susceptible to illness.

4. Joint Pain is Slowing You Down

Do you wake up with stiff, sore joints? Inflammation is often behind joint pain and stiffness, making it harder to move freely. Conditions like arthritis are linked to chronic inflammation, but even mild inflammation can leave you feeling older than you should.

5. Your Skin is Breaking Out—Again

Your skin is the largest organ in your body, and when inflammation is high, it often shows up as acne, redness, puffiness, or rashes. What you eat, your stress levels, and your environment all play a role in skin inflammation. If you're dealing with breakouts that won’t go away, it may be time to address internal inflammation.

How to Reduce Inflammation Naturally

The good news? You can lower inflammation and start feeling better with just a few simple changes. Here are three easy (but powerful) steps to get started:

Drink More Water – Staying hydrated helps flush out toxins and reduces inflammation. Aim for at least half your body weight in ounces per day to keep your body functioning optimally.

Eat More Anti-Inflammatory Foods – Load up on fruits, vegetables, and whole foods packed with antioxidants to fight inflammation. Prioritize leafy greens, berries, and omega-3-rich foods like salmon and walnuts.

Prioritize Rest and Recovery – Chronic stress and lack of sleep fuel inflammation. Make sleep a priority, and take time to rest and recover to help your body heal.
