5 Habits to Keep your Health on Track for Life

Updated: Feb 3

By Erica F Perusse, BS, MS/DI

Reaching your health goals is such an incredible accomplishment, and you deserve to celebrate every step of your journey. But let's be honest—it's natural to wonder, "What happens now?" Maintaining progress and staying on track can sometimes feel like a whole new challenge, especially as we embrace the mindset of “New Year, New Me.” You're not alone in feeling this way! The truth is, this next chapter is all about finding habits and strategies that fit your life and help you sustain the results you've worked so hard for.

Let's dive into five practical, approachable habits that can help you not just maintain your progress (build lean muscle mass, maintain weight, eat balanced, etc.) but truly thrive for the long haul. You've got this!

Focus on Consistency, not Perfection

Progress doesn't require you to be perfect—it's all about showing up consistently. Think about habits that feel doable and fit into your life, like prepping a few meals on Sunday or enjoying a quick 15-minute walk after dinner. Even the smallest steps can add up over time. The key is to focus on what you *can* do today, rather than waiting for the "perfect" moment to dive in.

Practical Tip: Start by setting small, achievable goals for the week. For example, aim to swap a protein-packed snack for chips three times this week. These small wins build momentum—and confidence!

Stay Accountable with a Community

Having a strong support system can truly be a game-changer, especially when tackling health goals and weight loss. Whether it's leaning on friends, family, or connecting with the NWE community, sharing your wins and struggles makes the journey feel a lot less lonely. Plus, there's something so powerful about cheering each other on—it can keep you motivated and remind you why you started.

Practical Tip: Plan regular check-ins with an accountability buddy or join group challenges to add some fun and fresh energy to your routine. Together, we're stronger!

Embrace Life's Seasons (and adjust accordingly)

Life is always changing, and so will your health and wellness needs. What worked perfectly last year might need a little adjustment today—and that's completely normal. Whether it's holidays, travel, or hormonal shifts, acknowledging life's natural ebb and flow helps you adapt and stay on track without feeling stuck.

Practical Tip: Let seasonal changes inspire you! Try out new recipes featuring in-season produce or switch up your exercise routine to match the shorter days. Small shifts can keep things exciting and sustainable.

Celebrate Non-Scale Victories

Your health journey is about so much more than just the numbers on a scale. Those non-scale victories—like having more energy, keeping up with your grandkids, or managing stress more effectively—are just as meaningful and deserve to be celebrated.

Practical Tip: At the end of each month, jot down three non-scale victories that made you proud. It's a simple way to reflect on how far you've come and keep the momentum going. Remember, it's about tracking your journey for life, not just for a season!

Keep Learning and Trying New Things

Your health journey is a lifelong adventure, so think of it as an ongoing opportunity to learn and grow. Whether it's exploring new recipes, experimenting with fitness routines, or finding stress management tools that work for you, staying curious can keep things fresh and exciting while helping you avoid burnout.

Practical Tip: Sign up for one-on-one nutrition coaching, join a small 8-week group, or participate in a monthly program, like those available in our Nourished Membership!
